Almost 6000 students from Omdurman Islamic University went on strike for the second consecutive day yesterday, demanding the registration of Darfur Students’ Association in the university students’ union. The demonstrators represented a large portion of the 11000 strong student body. One of the students on strike told Radio Dabanga the university union refused to have the Darfur Students’ Association registered on the basis that it is too large and would pose an administrative problem. They said that Darfur students should be registered based on their states (West, South and North Darfur). The student also added that the police and security forces are surrounding the university, and that they are expecting the forces to enter the university at any time to end the strike.
