Plans for North Darfur camps to become fully serviced residential districts

The Governor (Wali) of North Darfur, Sharif Samouh, has announced plans for the three camps of El Fasher for displaced people – Abu Shouk, El Salam, and Zamzam – to be turned into fully serviced residential districts.

The governor's announcement came during a consultative meeting that included a number of administrative and native leaderships for the three camps, in addition to the director of the state security and intelligence services, the representative of the Rapid Support Forces commander, and the humanitarian aid coordinator.

‘New housing schemes’

The governor announced that each family wishing to settle in the new plans would be granted a 300 square metre piece of land with an ownership certificate, this along with giving new names to the new housing schemes, linking them to an internal water network and providing services that would suit the population socially and environmentally.

Samouh said that his government would work to provide basic services with new housing schemes and areas of return, especially water, health, education, security and stability.

The director of El Nur Centre for Peace Studies at El Fasher University, Dr Saleh El Nur and a member of the coordination committee to adjust the status of displaced people in the state, pointed out that the conference of displaced people to be held this month in South Darfur will discuss how best to adjust the status of the displaced in a radical way.
