Two people died, and a third was critically injured in El Geneina, capital of West Darfur, on Sunday.
A listener told Radio Dabanga from West Darfur’s capital that during the visit of President Al Bashir to the city, for the official opening of the Zalingei-El Geneina part of the Salvation Road, police and security forces used batons and whips to control the crowd.
“The ceremony was held at the yard of the old El Geneina secondary school,” he explained. “When the people recruited by the authorities to attend the ceremony tried to dodge the blows, they pushed backwards, toward militiamen on camels and horses of standing behind them. A number of people were trampled.”
He reported that the militiamen, “also recruited by the authorities to attend”, attacked El Geneina market after the ceremony. “They severely beat and whipped a number of people at the market, before they pillaged the shops and stalls.”
