Passengers shot at North Darfur militia ‘toll gate’

In North Darfur, a bus passenger was shot dead, and two others were wounded by militiamen on the El Fasher-Nyala highway on Saturday. On the same day, a resident of the Kondobe camp for the displaced in West Darfur, was murdered by gunmen. Speaking to Radio Dabanga, one of the bus passengers said that the victims were shot in a dispute with militiamen manning a toll gate in Dar El Salam locality, North Darfur. Last week, militiamen imposed toll charges on vehicles travelling on the highway between the capitals of North and South Darfur. They established more than 40 “toll gates”, demanding passage fees of more than SDG1,000 ($175). Military uniforms In Sirba locality, West Darfur, militiamen in military uniforms murdered Abdallah Hassan Abakar in the Kondobe camp on Saturday evening. “They shot him dead, and injured his son Yahya Abdallah. The police stationed in the area heard the shots, but did not intervene”, one of Abakar’s neighbours at the camp reported to Radio Dabanga.   He called upon the authorities to intervene, and protect the displaced and their property.
