‘One fifth of Sudan’s militia troops foreign’: SPLM-N
The Sudan People Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) has reiterated its condemnation of the detention of Imam El Sadig El Mahdi, describing it as evidence of the totalitarianism of the regime. According to the SPLM-N, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) consists of 29,000 militiamen, of which more than 6,000 are foreigners. “The Sudanese regime’s detention of the leader of the National Umma Party (NUP) sent the wrong message, and at the same time fired a bullet at its so-called National Dialogue,” Yasir Arman, the secretary-general of SPLM-N told Radio Dabanga in an interview on Wednesday. “The detention should prompt the Umma Party and all the opposition forces to unite in order to topple this regime of terrorists. They are treating political parties and their leaders in the same way the Janjaweed militias treat innocent citizens,” the SPLM-N secretary-general said. Militias Regarding the RSF, a militia force formed by the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) in the second half of last year with the aim of eliminating the insurgency in Darfur, South Kordofan and the Blue Nile, Arman stated that they are “mercenaries and war criminals who have nothing to do with the Sudanese society and its values”. “President Al Bashir, his defence minister, Abdel Rahim Hussein, and NISS director, Mohamed Atta, have recruited and trained more than 29,000 Janjaweed. About 4,600 of them are Chadian rebels, more than 2,000 troops come from Mali, and the rest are militiamen recruited by Brig. Mohamed Hamdan Hemeti, mostly from Arab tribes, in Darfur and Kordofan.” Army Arman called the deployment of three RSF brigades around Khartoum a “strong evidence of using this militia as a substitute for the Sudanese army”. “This confirms that the regime is terrified, and does not trust the Sudan Armed Forces, which have been stripped of their responsibility.” He called upon the Sudanese army to stand up against the deployment of the RSF, “before it’s too late, because these militia elements will destroy the fabric of Sudan”. He also called on the residents of Khartoum to reject this militia, “before Sudan’s capital turns into another Darfur, where assaults, arson, murder, robberies, and rapes prevail”.
