North Darfur vendors strike for protection against militia
The shopkeepers of Birkat Seira in Saraf Umra locality, North Darfur, have entered into an open-ended strike since Wednesday. They are protesting against the looting and burning of a part of the market on Tuesday, for the third time in less than a week. One of the traders told Radio Dabanga that they have decided they would resume their business activities only after the security has improved. “The market stores are guarded by pro-government militias known as ‘A’ and ‘C’,” he said. He added that the leaders of the native administration of the government militias have intervened to resolve the problem. On Sunday, militiamen also plundered the market. A witness estimated the losses at thousands of Sudanese pounds. An entire Birkat Seira neighbourhood was stormed and pillaged on 17 April.
