North Darfur teachers end strike

The Teachers’ Committee in El Fasher locality, North Darfur, announced the end of the strike on Monday. Speaking to Radio Dabanga, Mohamed Makki Saleh, head of the Teachers Committee, and former director of El Wihda Secondary School in El Fasher, said that the Committee received a letter from the North Darfur State governor, Osman Kibir, about the payment of the arrears.  “On Sunday, we had a meeting with the governor.” On Monday, the security apparatus demanded from the Committee to announce the resumption of the lessons. “We had a meeting with security officers inside the security premises, and discussed the governor’s statement.” “After further consultations, we decided to end the strike, and called upon our colleagues in the locality to resume their work on Tuesday morning – for the public interest, and the interest of the students.” File photo: Students of the Um Maraheik secondary school for boys and girls in North Darfur (Albert González Farran/Unamid) Related: North Darfur students protest in solidarity with striking teachers (14 September 2014)Sudan Workers Union supports Darfur teachers’ strike (11 September 2014)
