North Darfur Governor warns about food shortage
Lack of rain during the recent planting season may lead to a “nutritional gap”, the North Darfur governor announced on Wednesday during a conference in the state capital El Fasher.In the summit, attended by a delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Governor Osman Kibir warned the situation may require the intervention of international organisations.Kibir also informed the ICRC delegation, headed by the director of operation of East Africa Eric Markley, about the security situation in North Darfur.“Despite some recent clashes between the army and the Sudan Liberation Movement-Minni Minawi, and some violent breakouts”, North Darfur is safe and stable, Kibir said.He added that insecurity problems in the state are being addressed by “a package of measures”, in which a combined force of regular troops, with the support of the Popular Committees, have the authority to search any building in El Fasher and arrest suspects. The measures have been termed as “a destruction of justice and a violation of the most basic human rights”, by the opposition National Consensus Forces.
