North Darfur citizens praise Paris declaration
North Darfur citizens have welcomed the Paris Declaration signed between the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF, an alliance of the main rebel movements) and the opposition National Umma Party (NUP) on 8 August. Sudan’s ruling party accused the signatories of drawing attention away from the National Dialogue. A North Darfuri activist speaking for the citizens in the state told Radio Dabanga that they consider the declaration as “a positive step”. He called upon the Umma party to stay committed to the agreement. “The Sudanese government does not believe in a dialogue that leads to a comprehensive solution for the conflicts in Sudan. It works to recruit militias that take advantage of the cessation of hostilities which the SRF declared in the Paris Declaration.” The activist called upon all political forces and the SRF to unite, and work to topple the Khartoum regime. In Khartoum, the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP) also welcomed the Paris Declaration, calling it “a major breakthrough that opens the way for a serious and fruitful dialogue with the SRF”. However, Dr Ibrahim Ghandour, Adviser to the President, called the declaration “an attempt in the wrong time, to draw attention away from the National Dialogue”. In a TV interview on Thursday, he said that the cessation of hostilities proposed by the SRF will allow the armed rebel movements to rearm their troops after recent defeats they suffered against government forces. NCP to re-nominate Al Bashir On Thursday, Mohamed El Hassan El Amin, a senior member of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP), stated that the party is leaning towards re-nominating President Omar Al Bashir for a new term in the scheduled April 2015 elections.
