Non-signatory armed movements may join Darfur peace process: Sese
Dr Tijani Sese, the chairman of the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA), after his return from a forum in Um Jaras in Chad has briefed President Omar Al Bashir about developments towards peace in Darfur. Together with the head of the Darfur Peace Follow-up Office, Dr Amin Hassan Omar, Sese had been invited by the Chadian president, Idris Deby, attend a forum in Chad’s Um Jaras on the situation in Darfur. Sese said in a press statement on Thursday, 31 October, that he “sensed the desire of the Chadian President, Idris Deby to cooperate with President Al Bashir for peace in Darfur”. He also reported that the Sudanese Liaison Committee, headed by Siddeeg Wad’a, had visited Kampala, the capital of Uganda, and spoken with from non-signatory Darfuri armed movements. Sese stated that a number of the non-signatory movements intend to enter the Darfur peace process. The head of the Darfur Peace Follow-up Office noted that Chadian President Idris Deby conveyed that “this season is the last for war in Darfur”. According to Omar “the signs that some non-signatories may join the Darfur peace process are not enough, unless practical steps are taken towards the realisation of peace”.
