Newly displaced in Darfur in dire need

In El Salam camp, located south of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, the more than 6,000 new displaced are in urgent need of food. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan, the number of newly displaced in Darfur currently amounts to 261,065. “The newly displaced in El Salam camp wonder why the humanitarian organisations do not provide relief to them”, Sheikh Mahjoub Adam Tabaldiya told Radio Dabanga. “The 6,387 people among the newly displaced who have finally been registered by the Organization for Migration (IOM) in May and June, have not received any aid so far.” “These people fled from areas south and east of the Ed Daein-Nyala railway, from Gireida locality, and from the Bembere refugee camp in the Central African Republic”, the sheikh explained. Tabaldiya stressed that they are living in a dire humanitarian situation. He appealed to international organisations and the Sudanese government to accelerate the provision of aid, in particular food. There are currently about 261,065 newly displaced people in Darfur, OCHA reported in its 6 July situation update on new displacements in Darfur. The cumulative figure of civilian displacement in the region, since the beginning of 2014, stands at 390,112. This number includes 129,047 returns.
