New heavy Misseriya-Salamat tribal clashes in Central Darfur

During renewed clashes between the Misseriya and the Samamat tribes on Thursday and Friday in the area of Suwar Waga, 22km east of Umm Dukhun, Central Darfur, 12 people were reportedly killed. Witnesses told Radio Dabanga that violent clashes between Misseriya and Salamat broke out at about 12am on Thursday and continued until sunset. 12 members of the Salamat were reportedly killed and 17 injured. The witnesses stated that on Thursday they heard the sound of gun and cannon fire until after sunset, and confirmed the presence of large groups of fighters from both sides in the area of Suwar Waga. A prominent member of the Salamat confirmed the dead and injured of their tribe, without being able to specify the exact number of casualties. Sources told Radio Dabanga that the fights between the two tribes were resumed this afternoon in the areas of Suwar Waga and Miraya. They fear that the situation in the area will grow worse and may explode in case the authorities and the “native administration” do not intervene to separate the two tribes and contain the fighting.
