Fleeing villagers from Jebel Marra continue to arrive at the Central Darfur camps for the displaced.
El Shafee Abdallah, Coordinator of the Central Darfur camps, told Radio Dabanga that the newly displaced “fled attacks by army and militia forces on the villages of Kaninga, Kutrum, Golo, Kouro, and Baladong”.
He claims that the Central Darfur authorities have refused to provide aid to the new displaced, “even the children”, and did not grant access to humanitarian organisations either.
“The authorities also do not allow the establishment of new camps, and forbid the displaced to camp in public places.”
The Governor of Central Darfur, Jaafar Abdelhakam, told officials of the ruling National Congress Party in the state capital Zalingei on Saturday that the government forces are ready to enter the area of Sarrong, south of Golo, within the coming two days.
He declared the northern part of Jebel Marra “free of rebels”, especially the areas around Rokoro, and said that the population of northern Jebel Marra are ready to participate in the Darfur referendum in April, to decide on the administrative status of the region.
