More than 350 lawyers gather in Khartoum and Nyala in peaceful protest

Hundreds of Sudanese lawyers protested on Monday in Khartoum and Nyala demanding President Omar Al Bashir to stop the use of excessive violence against peaceful protesters. A petition was handed in at the presidential palace demanding the release of all political prisoners, a halt to the illegal trials of peaceful protesters, a halt to the violations of protesters constitutional rights and the freedom of the press.

300 protesters gathered in front of the top court in Khartoum yelling “demonstrating is a constitutional right”. Jelal Al Sayid, a well-known Sudanese lawyer, told Radio Dabanga they were on their way to the presidential palace of Omar Al Bashir to hand over the petition when they were barricaded by government police. Four lawyers were allowed to pass the roadblocks to hand over the petition at the presidential palace.

In Nyala more than sixty (60) lawyers protested in front of the local government building in South Darfur. Adam Sharif, a prominent lawyer, demanded the government of South Darfur to guarantee security in the Darfur region and tackle the high prices of essential commodities.
