Militiamen gang-rape girl, shoot woman, rob man in South Darfur
Three militiamen gang-raped a 10-tear-old girl from Kalma camp for the displaced near Nyala in South Darfur on Tuesday. In the Dereig camp, also in Nyala locality, militiamen robbed a displaced man of his motorcycle on Wednesday. A woman passer-by was shot. Dr Saleh Eisa Mohamed, Secretary-General of Kalma camp told Radio Dabanga that three “militiamen of the Rapid Support Forces led by Janjaweed (Hemeti)” in military uniforms alternately raped the girl for an hours and a half. The girl was taking food to her father who was working on a farm in the nearby Wadi Birli. The family of the girl obtained a Form 8*, and transferred her to a hospital in Nyala. Dereig camp Halima Saeed Ahmed of the Dereig camp for the displaced was seriously injured on Wednesday evening after being shot by “government-backed militiamen”. “The men had just stolen the motorcycle of Yagoub Abakar Abdel Karim”, a Dereig camp sheikh told Radio Dabanga. Ahmed, with bullet wounds in the chest and shoulder, was transferred to the Nyala Teaching Hospital for treatment. * In Sudan, medical evidence of an assault is admitted only via Form 8. This form provides only limited medical information. It can be issued only by police stations, or approved hospitals and clinics. Until criminal procedures were revised in 2004, a victim could not even receive treatment for a sexual assault until a Form 8 had been filed. Critics state that Form 8 is “glaringly inadequate”, as sufficient medical evidence is often very difficult to obtain.
