Militiamen attack farmers in Gallab, North Darfur
A group of militiamen used violence to prevented farmers in Gallab area, south-west of El Fasher, capital of North Darfur, from cultivating their land last week.
One of the victims reported to Radio Dabanga that on Wednesday morning a number of paramilitaries in three Land Cruisers mounted with Dushka machineguns attacked the about 50 farmers tending their land in Gallab.
“They shouted that the ‘liberated’ farmland has become a pasture for camels and cattle,” he said. “They severely beat and whipped us, and robbed us of our money and belongings.”
The farmer demanded the local and North Darfur state authorities intervene to protect the farmers and expel the paramilitaries from their lands so that they can safely cultivate their crops.
In a clash between herders and farmers over ‘land liberated from the insurgents’ in Um Tajok in West Darfur last week, 23 people were killed and 12 were wounded.
