Maternal mortality rate has risen in Darfur

The maternal death rates in Darfur rose in 2013 from 633 to 727 cases per 100,000 pregnancies, a report issued by the Sudanese Ministry of Health on Tuesday indicated. Infant and neonatal mortality figures show an escalation by 94 percent. Child mortality increased last year to 75.3 deaths per 100,000 children. The government’s report noted that the poverty rate in Darfur has jumped to 62.5 percent, while the overall poverty rate in Sudan stands at 46.5 percent.
