Mass protest in South Darfur’s Kalma camp against repeated raids
Thousands of displaced demonstrated in Kalma camp in South Darfur, today, in protest against repeated raids by government forces in the past weeks. “After government forces again stormed Kalma camp this morning, thousands of camp residents gathered in protest against the raids. The government forces withdrew immediately”, Saleh Eisa, Secretary-General of Kalma camp reported to Radio Dabanga. “The protesters shouted slogans against the government, rejecting its policies, and the repeated raids of the camp, and demanded the ruling National Congress Party’s demise”, Eisa said. “They consider the raids part of an attempt to dismantle the camp by force.” “Various camp elders, women and youth leaders gave speeches, denouncing Al Bashir’s government, and Unamid’s slackness in providing protection. They appealed to the UN Security Council to intervene to protect the displaced in Darfur, in particular the Kalma camp population.” Eisa added that the displaced decided to stage a mass demonstration on Friday. “They plan to continue protesting to alert Sudan and the world about the atrocities committed by the Khartoum regime in the country. They said they will continue until the government has been toppled.” During the raid of Kalma camp this morning, a young man and three children were wounded, the camp’s Secretary-General noted. They are Mubarak Mohamed Al Ibrahim (17), Nawara Yagoub Abdallah (11), Idris Ali Adam (9), and Nahar Abdallah Adam (7).
