‘Majority of Darfuris have no income’: Regional Authority
The Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) has affirmed that the majority of the population of Darfur has no steady income. They are not producing, after they had to abandon their homes and lands, and went to live “in tents”. These are the conclusions of a training workshop on needs assessment the DRA organised in El Fasher, capital of North Darfur, last week. The speakers and participants attributed the dire situation to the fighting in the region. “The majority of the Darfuri population lives on charity provided by humanitarian organisations.” According to DRA officials this ranks the people of Darfur at “the bottom of the list of people in Sudan”. They called upon “all the components of the Darfur community to unite, so as to save the region from a complete failure”. File photo: Newly displaced in South Darfur, 1 March 2014 (ericreeves.org)
