Refugees fear it might create unrest in camps

A delegation of the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) will visit the city of Nyala, South Darfur on Thursday as a part of the scheduled tour of the Darfuri states.

The delegation led by LJM’s vice president Ahmed Abdul Shafi Toba is meant to talk to different parties about the recently signed Doha peace agreement between the LJM and the government of Sudan.

Ahmed Fadel, spokesperson of the movement told Radio Dabanga, “The people of Darfur should support the enforcement and implementation of the Doha agreement, since it is meant for the gain of the people of Darfur.”

Refugees express fear

Meanwhile, refugees in Kalma camp expressed fear over the visits from the LJM delegation. They said that such visits could cause a repeat of what happened previously when delegates from the Doha forum returned to the camps and caused violence in Kalma resulting in several deaths and injuries.

This especially because there are enough indicators of the Sudanese government using such tactics to spread unrest in the camp, leading to worse humanitarian conditions.

The humanitarian affairs coordinator for the Kalma camp said that they would be affected by the “partial” Doha agreement. “There is a sense of curiosity among the refugees about how it will affect their future.” he said.

The refugees claimed that though they were in favour of peace, they didn’t send representatives to Qatar for negotiations because of the partial nature of the talks.
