President Omar Al Bashir ready to sign the decree for new states in Darfur
Amin Hassan Omar, head of the Darfur Peace Process follow-up committee, is expecting the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) delegation in Khartoum next week.Amir Hassan Omar said that the Qatari mediator Ahmed Bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud will also be joining in the proceedings alongside the Tijani Sese-led LJM delegation within ten days.
The Doha Peace Agreement was signed between the government of Sudan and the LJM in July earlier this year. It has faced sharp criticism from observers for not being inclusive of the major opposition groups in Darfur.
New states agreed upon
Amin Hassan Omar met with Sudanese president Omar Al Bashir on Sunday and agreed on the establishment of new states in Darfur in the near future. The meeting also discussed the prospect of future governors for these states. Only signing of the presidential decree is pending.
“We assessed the over all situation in Darfur and followed up on what needs to be implemented in the next stage. There has been a special focus on the establishment of new states in Darfur,” he was quoted as saying in a local Khatroum news daily.
The new states East and Central Darfur are expected to be carved out of the existing South and West Darfur respectively.
Hassan Omar added that the division of assets between these states had been finalized.
