Leaders Sudanese refugee camps in Chad invited to UNHCR conference

The heads of 12 Sudanese refugee camps in eastern Chad received an official invitation from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to attend a conference in Abeché in Chad, lasting from Monday to Wednesday.

The heads of 12 Sudanese refugee camps in eastern Chad received an official invitation from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to attend a conference in Abeché in Chad, lasting from Monday to Wednesday. A head of one of the camps told Radio Dabanga it is unclear what the exact agenda and goal of the conference are. Ali Yaguob, sheikh of camp Trijm, told Radio Dabanga that he only received information stating that the conference will be hosted by the Republic of Chad and the Sudanese government. He expressed the expectation that the voluntary return of Sudanese refugees  to Sudan will be the central topic. However, Ali Yaguob stated that the Sudanese refugees would not return unless the Janjaweed is disarmed, the new settlers are expelled from their lands, a compensation is offered to the refugees, all the perpetrators of crimes in Darfur are taken to trial and a commitment is made to ensure the security and comprehensive peace in the province of Darfur.
