Kutum residents demand security circle expansion
Kutum residents demand an expansion of the security circle, to include surrounding villages and both Kassab and Fatta Barno camps. In addition, they demand re-installment of the judicial and police apparatus as soon as possible. Sheikh Taher Ismail, head of Kassab camp, told Radio Dabanga: “the lesson is not in decision-making, but in the implementation of the decisions”. He pointed out that the Governor of North Darfur, Osman Kibir, took more than four decisions and made a number of agreements since the outbreak of the recent atrocities without implementing them so far. “Zero tolerance” policyOn the same note, Brigadier Mohammad Kamal Mohamed Nur, administrative and executive supervisor of Kutum and El-Waha localities, announced on Friday September 7 that the citizens’ security and protection of public institutions are of utmost importance. He stated he will strike with an iron fist against those compromising the citizens’ security and the region’s stability. Mohamed Nur addressed the people at Kutum’s mosque after Friday prayers, saying he will implement the law without favoritism or discrimination. He appealed to Kutum residents to assist him in performing his duties, in order to improve security and stability.The brigadier emphasized he will not allow anyone, except for government troops, to carry weapons within the city of Kutum. He added that the curfew hours will be lifted gradually, if the security conditions permit. Mohamed Nur disclosed he will meet with the Department of Education soon to discuss re-opening of schools as soon as possible. Government troops behind Kutum incidentsOsman Kibir, Governor of North Darfur, accused an armed group, belonging to the government, of being behind the incidents in Kutum of the past two days. He described the armed group as “undisciplined”, as their loyalty should be towards the military institution and not towards the tribe.
