Kalma: four months without aid, nearing full consensus on WFP process

Kalma internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in South Darfur has now spent four months without food aid assistance as they were reluctant to sign up to the World Food Programme’s (WFP) re-registration process. Camp leader Ali Abdul Rahman Tahir urged the WFP to provide urgent relief to Kalma camp. He said the suffering of IDPs is spreading especially amongst children, women and the elderly. Tahir asked for the UN to visit Kalma to assess the humanitarian situation. He said six of the eight sectors have now decided to sign up to the WFP’s registration process, and urged the other two sectors to do the same. The last two sectors are still in consultation and yet to deliver a final decision in writing. The leader said the representatives will wait for all sectors to be on board, which they say will be soon, and they then will expect the WFP to start registration and approve an operation to provide aid to the area.
