ICC issues arrest warrant to Sudanese defence minister
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for the Minister of National Defence and the Interior, Special Representative of the President in Darfur, Abdel Rahim Muhammed Hussein. The arrest is warranted for 41 counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes allegedly committed in Darfur. In a statement the Court said it ‘considers there are reasonable grounds to believe Hussein is criminally responsible for 20 counts of crimes against humanity including persecution, murder, forcible transfer, rape, inhumane acts, imprisonment, torture.’ It has also charged the National Defence minister with war crimes such as murder, attacks against civilians, property destruction, rape and pillaging. The ICC said it ‘considers Hussein an influential member of the Sudanese government through his overall coordination of national, state, and local entities, and through the recruitment of police forces and militia in Darfur.’
