Hikma reunited with family after eight years
Hikma Omer Ibrahim Abdel Karim has been reunited with her family after she was abducted in 2004 from the area of Kaylake, Shataya Locality in South Darfur. She was reunited with her family on Thursday September 13 in Kass IDP camp, South Darfur. The girl’s father, Omer Ibrahim Abdel Karim, disclosed in an interview with Radio Dabanga (to be broadcast on Saturday) that his daughter was kidnapped from Kaylake when she was seven years of age. She was kidnapped together with 22 other children when government troops and militias attacked the area in 2004. The troops carried out extensive looting, killing, raping, torturing and kidnapping.Omer, who currently resides in Kass IDP camp and works as an elementary school teacher, said Hikma managed to escape from her kidnappers and went to a police station in Umm Dirso south of Umm Lubasa in Eid el-Firsan Locality, South Darfur. Hikma’s father said that she left behind four other children, two girls and two boys, when she escaped. On the other hand, Omer revealed that during the eight years of his daughter’s abduction, she took care of the kidnapper’s sheep during the daytime, and in the evening she took care of his family consisting of eight people; six of them children. He explained that a man named Osman Ibrahim kidnapped his daughter and treated her brutally. Hikma was beaten without any clear reason and was isolated completely to prevent her from talking to shepherds or anyone else in the region except for the kidnapper’s family. Most days Hikma would only get one meal a day. The father added that the kidnapper changed Hikma’s name to Hawa Umm Kheir. He pointed out that a delegation from UNAMID came to his house and asked about Hikma’s return.Omer added that he registered a report with the Sudanese police back in 2004. Upon his daughter’s return, Omer went back to the police and was informed that the report of his Hikma’s abduction got lost. The police asked him to register a new report.
