High increase in airfare prices
Citizens from all of Darfur’s states have complained about the recent increase in airfare prices. Sources told Radio Dabanga on Tuesday, 4 December, that the price of a one-way ticket from Nyala to Khartoum now costs more than 1.2 million Sudanese pounds.A source said that citizens are demanding the state and central government to intervene and reduce the prices. He pointed out that due to the current security situation in the region; planes are the only means of transport to reach Khartoum from Darfur. It was added that students and patients are mostly affected by the price increase; patients die as a result of the inability to obtain tickets, whereas the majority of Darfuri students are forced to spend their holidays in Khartoum due to the high prices of airfares. MP Nasr al-Deen Ahmed Omar called on the government to intervene immediately and reduce the airfare prices to Darfur. Additionally, he demanded the government to stop the rise in prices of railway transport. He has appealed to the government to review the rising prices and to speed up the completion of the Western Salvation Road to ‘ease the suffering of the people’. Also, he pointed to 400% price increase of rail transport without prior notice, and predicted this would lead to a price increase of consumer goods in Darfur.
