Health fears as Darfur camp receives 1,000 new displaced families
The sheikh of Kalma camp said the number of newly displaced people who have arrived at the site has reached 8,482 families. This is up from an estimated 7,111 on Wednesday. Sheikh Ali Tahir stressed that he expected the number to rise even further as people continue to flee areas east and south of Nyala following ongoing clashes between government forces and the SRF rebel alliance. Tahir reported that nine aid agencies had visited the new arrivals and the UN agencies OCHA and Unicef warned of the spread of disease among newly displaced people. The Sheikh has appealed to humanitarian organizations to speed-up the provision of food, medicine, tents, tarpaulins and toilets to the camp’s new arrivals.File photo: New arrivals in Zamzam camp (UNAMID)Related: 7,111 families reach Darfur camps receiving ‘daily flows’ of displaced (1 May 2013)
