Gunmen set North Darfur university on fire

Unknown gunmen set fire to parts of the University of El Fasher in North Darfur on Thursday, the third consecutive day of unrest in the state capital. The office of the dean of student affairs, as well as three cars meant for university staff, were affected by the fire in the early hours of Thursday. The director of the university, Osman Abdel Jabbar, said the attackers were masked men. “It is unlikely they are students from the university.” The director stressed to the pro-government Ashorooq TV that the university “will not be affected by the incident, and will push ahead the implementation of its sports and academic programs”. El Fasher was shaken by a clash between police and border guards on Tuesday, which led to a number of dead and wounded. The border guards had attempted to break into the stores of the Agricultural Bank. On Wednesday, militiamen driving a Land Cruiser kidnapped a banker after they had intercepted his car inside the city.
