Gunmen kill home-bound South Darfur student
An 18-year-old student in Nyala city, South Darfur, was shot dead by two men in military uniform on Wednesday afternoon. Omar Sharafeldin, a student at a Nyala secondary school, was shot dead while returning home at 2 pm. The perpetrators were riding a motorcycle. After killing him, they stole his mobile, and ran away.The UK-based Sudan Social Development Organization (Sudo) calls on the Sudanese government to fulfil its obligation to protect civilians in Darfur. “Pro-government militias which kill and displace civilians should be disbanded without delay,” the organisation wrote in an online statement.“The African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (Unamid) must immediately act to fulfil its mandate to protect civilians in Darfur.” Sudo demanded that the mission investigates the human rights abuses by all parties, and make the investigation results public. Nyala has been the scene of increased violence, robberies, and abductions by pro-government militias during the past months. “Those militiamen severely beat anyone whose mobile telephone turns out to be a cheap one,” a witness told Radio Dabanga in the beginning of last month. The militiamen are believed to be members of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
