Gunfire terrorises camp residents in South Darfur
Militiamen terrorised El Salam camp in Nyala locality, South Darfur, when they fired a hail of bullets into the air on Thursday evening. Sheikh Mahjoub Adam Tabaldiya of El Salam camp told Radio Dabanga that militiamen stormed the camp market and centre 4 and 6 of the camp on Thursday evening and fired shots in the air. They continued to shoot from 8pm until 11pm and then pulled out of the camp. Tabaldiya said that the incident happened “under the eyes and ears of the Unamid forces, the police and the army”. Camp residents called on Unamid and the Sudanese police to do their work and patrol throughout the day to prevent the entry of militias into the camp and prevent shooting and looting. “Displaced people have the right to be protected from this harm,” the sheikh said. The militiamen regularly storm the El Salam camp. According to Tabaldiya, “the aim of the repetitive raids is to empty the camp of displaced people and multiply the suffering of the displaced.”File photo by Albert González Farran / Unamid Related: Militiamen ‘in military uniforms’ gang-rape woman in South Darfur (17 November 2013)
