Goods, livestock looted in Saraf Omra for sale in West Darfur capital
Musa Hilal militias continue to arrive in El Geneina since Saturday. During the last few days between 10 and 20 Land Cruisers daily arrive from Saraf Omra to the capital of West Darfur. Listeners in El Geneina told Radio Dabanga that daily 10 to 20 Land Cruisers arrive at the town. “The vehicles are loaded with plundered goods and large quantities of livestock.” “The goods and livestock are offered for sale. Yet the traders and citizens here refused to buy them, though they are offered at very competitive prices. They sell a large sack (about 100kg) of sugar for SDG180 ($31.50), while the market price is SDG350 ($61). A jerry can of cooking oil is offered for SDG150 ($26), while at the market it costs SDG240 ($42). They sell television sets, mobile phones, men, women and children’s clothes, shoes, beds, mattresses, and bed sheets, as well as large numbers of cows and sheep.” Saraf Omra On Saturday militias led by the well-know Janjaweed leader Musa Hilal attacked Saraf Omra and the villages in the vicinity. They plundered the market, shops and houses in Saraf Omra, as well as dozens of villages west of the town. An entire neighbourhood in the western part of Saraf Omra, and seven villages west of the town were pillaged and burned. The militia forces set up checkpoints, and took over town entrances and government facilities. The majority of the militiamen pulled out of Saraf Omra on Sunday. Sources in El Geneina told Radio Dabanga that a large number of Land Cruisers loaded with dead and wounded militia troops from Saraf Omra arrived on Saturday. The sources explained that “Musa Hilal has a large number of followers in West Darfur”.Other vehicles loaded with goods and livestock looted from Saraf Omra also arrived to West Darfur’s capital on Saturday.
