Girl dies under Unamid vehicle in South Darfur
A seven-year-old girl has died in a traffic accident involving a Unamid armoured patrol vehicle on Saturday. Unamid has confirmed the tragedy, offering condolences to the child’s family. Listeners told Radio Dabanga that Asma Mohamed Khamis, from Otash camp for the displaced, died after being run-over by a Unamid armoured personnel carrier (APC) near to Nyala, capital of South Darfur. “The APC was part of a Unamid patrol. They were moving from the Mission’s headquarters towards Kalma camp. The accident occurred as the column passed through the University of Nyala at about 3 pm. Little Asma died at the scene,” a witness said. Speaking to Radio Dabanga on Sunday, Unamid spokesperson Guiomar Pau confirmed that the accident involved a Unamid APC but declined to elaborate any further: “Unamid sincerely regrets the incident, and we offer our deepest condolences to the family of the victim,” Pau said. “Unfortunately, owing to the ongoing investigation, we cannot release any further details at this time.” Witnesses reported that a case has been filed with the Nyala traffic authorities.
