French president calls on Sudan warring parties to ‘lay down arms’
French President Emmanuel Macron has called for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, urging all warring parties to stop fighting after 20 months of brutal conflict. Speaking in Ethiopia’s capital of Addis Ababa on Saturday, Macron stressed the need for regional actors to take action to end the suffering of the Sudanese people.
Macron also highlighted France’s efforts to support Sudan, recalling a conference held in Paris in April to mobilise international aid and push for an end to the war.
The French president praised Sudanese civil society for its leadership during the 2019 revolution, particularly the youth and women who played a pivotal role in the movement.
He emphasised the need for their continued involvement in the country’s future, calling for their voices to be heard and respected.
