Four wounded in South Darfur militia attack

Pro-government militiamen attacked Hashaba in Katila locality, South Darfur, and wounded four displaced people on Friday. A witness said that the 15 militia members attacked Hashaba, an area for voluntary returning internally displaced people, while riding on the backs of camels and horses early Friday morning. The village lies west of Gireida town. Four of the residents, Abdallah Adam, Mohammed Eisa, Adam Eisa, and Ahmed Adam Hussein were wounded. Three people are still missing following the attack. The injured have been transferred to the hospital in Gireida for treatment. The source told Radio Dabanga that the group of militiamen stole six horses and five horse carts during the attack, along with other properties of the displaced people. The Hashaba voluntary repatriation program is implemented by the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) and is meant for displaced people who voluntarily return to tend farmlands. The militiamen’s attack, however, spread panic amongst the people, according to the witness. “The local authorities carry responsibility for the deteriorating security situation in the region,” he said.
