Fire lays waste to stalls, shops in Kass, South Darfur
More than 150 stalls and 20 shops were destroyed by fire in the South Darfur city of Kass on Saturday. Witnesses told Radio Dabanga that the blaze began in Kass market at about 8 pm. Citizens used sand and water to fight the blaze, but could not save the stalls or shops. They stressed that the area has no fire engines or formal fire brigade. The witness said that that the majority of the owners of the destroyed shops are displaced, as the South side of the market is adjacet to the camp. They noted that “this fire is the fifth of its kind in several months”. Material losses are estimated at thousands of Pounds.
