Fire in 3 Darfur states destroys a total of 267 houses

Isolated fire incidents that left a total of 267 houses destroyed have taken place over the last three days across three different states in Darfur. Two hundred homes were burned down at the El Salam displaced camp near Nyala in South Darfur on Thursday, according to its residents.They said flames broke out at 12:00pm at Center 3 before spreading to Centers 1 and 2. Stocked grains and foodstuff were also destroyed.A displaced told Radio Dabanga that El Salam’s residents are not aware of what may have caused the fire.The source noted that many families are now homeless and are lacking food and he urged organizations and authorities to provide tank trucks to the camp.El Salam has received 21,000 extra residents since March. They are fleeing clashes between government and rebel troops. The camp is already home to some 65,000 displaced.In Garsila, Central Darfur, flames have destroyed 37 houses between Wednesday and Thursday in three camps: Jeddah, Jeblein and Ardiba.  Last week, a child was burned inside a house that caught on fire at the Jeddah camp.The latest incidents in Garsila bring the total amount of houses destroyed by fire to 78 in the last three weeks only.Sheikhs and omdas of the three sites in Garsila met on Thursday with the emergency committee of a Norwegian agency operating in the region.Parties discussed issues surrounding the recent fire incidents at the camps and how to avoid them from being repeated during the upcoming summer months, when the situation could become more fragile due to droughts.Camps’ representatives also asked the committee to provide homeless families material for building houses such as tarps and straws and to kitchen tools.
