Fire destroys clinic in South Darfur’s Kalma camp
Merlin, a British medical organization operating in Darfur since 2004, confirmed that its clinic in Kalma camp was completely destroyed by fire two days ago. A fire in the neighboring residential area went out of control and spread to the clinic. The primary care clinic had been built from local materials. Merlin Country Director Rashid Gaal said that he is 100 percent certain that the fire was an accident. Radio Dabanga regrets mistakenly reporting that the clinic was run by Doctors Without Borders, which had run the clinic until March 2009. One of the sheikhs of the camp said that they sat down with the hospital administration and discussed reconstruction of the clinic so as not to lead to a crisis in treatment. But Merlin’s country director said that medical care will not be affected because Merlin has another facility in the camp housing their nutrition program. The NGO is also receiving support from the local community and two other NGOs.
