At least one student was arrested, and others beaten and subject to tear gas when security agents and police raided the campus of El Fasher University in the North Darfur capital yesterday morning.
Student Ahmed Musa told Radio Dabanga that a force from the security services, rapid support militia, and police, using several vehicles, stormed the university and opened fire in the air. This caused panic among the students, but none were injured by the gunfire.
The raid was a pre-emptive one to prevent a demonstration by students protesting the visit to El Fasher by Sudan’s President Omar Al Bashir to mark the completion of implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) and the consequent dismantling of the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA).
Musa said added that the force then attacked the students with batons and tear gas, beat them, and student Abdelhakim Adam Abdelrazek, who was taken to an unknown destination.
