El Burhan: Current Sudan govt must be dissolved

The head of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council, Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, stressed that there is no solution to the current situation except by dissolving the transitional government. He said, during his address on Monday morning to officers, non-commissioned officers, and soldiers of the Khartoum North Military District, that the military component of the transitional government rejects attempts by their civilian counterparts to continue the partnership in its previous form.

El Burhan said that it is necessary to form a Legislative Council representing all the people, “except for those affiliated with the National Congress Party [of ousted President Omar Al Bashir]”.

He said that the leadership of the security and military forces “is not a place for political bargaining and will not be subject to the current quotas”, explaining that whoever decides on them will be the one chosen by the people through elections, in reference to the demands of the Forces of Freedom and Change to hand over the management of the police and General Intelligence Service (GIS) to the civilian government.

He referred to what he called attempts to exclude the armed forces from the transitional scene, including what is related to them, and accused political forces he did not name of trying to occupy public opinion by creating problems with the armed forces and rapid support, and said that these forces caused problems that impede the political transition by refusing to dialogue and the participation of the other.
