East Darfur: Labado displaced seek refuge at Unamid base
Two gunmen were killed, an infant injured, and a displaced man went missing in Yassin locality, East Darfur, in a clash between a local rescue team and militiamen on Tuesday. Fearing a revenge attack, the residents of Labado camp sought refuge at the nearby Unamid base. “Five government-backed militiamen on camels attempted to steal about 300 goats and sheep from the Labado camp for the displaced in Yassin locality,” a camp elder reported to Radio Dabanga on Wednesday, “whereupon the herders of the livestock sought help among their relatives living at the camp. “A rescue team was quickly formed of camp residents, who clashed with the gunmen. Two of the assailants were killed, and six-months-old Mahasin Ismail Bashir was injured. Camp resident Mohamed Hassan Adam Rashid (35) went missing.” The commissioner of Yassin locality, Abdelrahman Eisa, visited the area, and took the bodies of the slain with him when he left. The camp elder added that “all the displaced, amounting to 13,370 people, sought refuge at the Unamid team site, located north of Labado camp, out of fear for imminent revenge attacks by the militiamen”. He said that a large number of gunmen are currently besieging the eastern and northern parts of the area.
