Drought threatens Darfur harvest

With no rain since the beginning of September, farmers across Darfur fear the current agricultural season will be a dismal failure.

Farmers from Central, West, South, and North Darfur have told Radio Dabanga that their crops – especially millet, sorghum, groundnuts, and sesame – have ripened and then dried because of the lack of rainfall.

They have expressed concern at the failure of the current agricultural season which represents a major loss in terms of the money and labour that has been invested.

In early August, heavy rains caused flash floods and destroyed homes and shelters across Darfur, but there has been little rainfall since.
