Displaced in Darfur call for protection from Janjaweed

The population of the Kassab and Kabkabiya camps for the displaced in North Darfur, the Gereida, Mershing, Kass, Kalma and El Salam camps in South Darfur, the Niertiti camps in Central Darfur, and the Murnei camp in West Darfur are complaining of being subjected to “almost daily attacks by government-backed militiamen” inside and outside the camps. “The displaced in most of Darfur are continuously assaulted in their homes and outside the camps, especially when they go to collect firewood, straw, or to fetch water,” Saleh Eisa, the Secretary-General of the Kalma camp for the displaced in Nyala locality, South Darfur, told Radio Dabanga. “As a result of those attacks, the people are hindered in getting their daily breadwinning, because the collection of firewood and straw, and the production of building bricks are the only ways for them to make a living.” The displaced of the camps have jointly appealed to the authorities and Unamid to do more to protect them, and put an end to the abuses of the Janjaweed.
