Disease kills two children, four elderly in Darfur camps

Two children and four seniors have reportedly died of disease in El Salam and Nertiti camps in South and Central Darfur. On Wednesday, El Salam camp saw the death of Adam Aduom Bakhit (11 months) and Turabi Ismail Mahmoud (14 years) due to high fever and vomiting, one of the sheiks of the camp told Radio Dabanga. He blamed the deaths on a shortage of medicine and health care. A sheikh of Nertiti camp in Central Darfur told Radio Dabanga that four elderly displaced persons have died of similar symptoms to the El Salam children. Both sheikhs appealed to local authorities and humanitarian organisations to provide the displaced with tents, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, and shelter. They also appealed to the responsible authorities to bridge and drain the pools of stagnant water that have collected during the rainy season. These represent the latest of multiple reports reaching Radio Dabanga from camps for the displaced throughout Darfur, as well as refugee camps in eastern Chad, that show that some challenges are endemic: a shortage of food, shelter, clean drinking water, security and medical care.
