Deputy editor of Rai Al Sha’ab subjected to beating and electric shock
The deputy editor of the newspaper Rai Al Sha’ab was subjected to torture by members of the security service. The journalist, Abu Zar Ali Elamin, is currently being detained by the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS). He was arrested in a dawn raid on 16 May, just hours after the national security service moved against Hassan Al Turabi, the leader of the Popular Congress Party (PCP). Rai Al Sha’ab newspaper is linked with Turabi’s party.

A member of the journalist’s family said that Abu Zar faces criminal charges. The prosecution accuses Abu Zar Ali Elamin of “waging war against the state” and “undermining the constitutional order” — a charge that could carry the death penalty. Besides those, he also faces charges related to the press law.
