Darfur student remains in detention
The Khartoum University student and president of the Darfur Association of Students, Muhammed Idriss Gedo remains in custody after his arrest on January 1. Gedo was arrested in December last year after participating in a protest to support students from Manasir, displaced by the building of the Merowe Dam.He was released on the same day, and suffered knee injuries in custody. The student was arrested again on January 1 after taking part in a news conference at the University of Khartoum. Gedo boarded a bus which was then surrounded by 17 security personnel carrying rifles. They reportedly beat the conductor, threatened passengers and forcefully abducted the student. He was taken to an unknown destination where he remains today. There are no details about the state of his health, or the charges brought against him.The Darfur Association of Students and legal activists call for Muhammed’s immediate release.
