Darfur rebels accuse Sudan’s Vice-President of supervising militias
The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) has accused Sudan’s Second Vice-President of leading a campaign to mobilise tribes in Darfur. In a statement released today (Tuesday) JEM said that the Khartoum regime is still recruiting tribesmen in Darfur. The mobilisation campaign, under the supervision of Second Vice-President, Hassabo Mohamed Abdel Rahman, is carried out “on an ethnic basis”, and targets particular Darfuri communities “on the same ethnic basis”. JEM pointed in its statement to the “horrible crimes recently committed by the militias of the Khartoum regime” in the areas southeast of Nyala in South Darfur, and north of El Fasher in North Darfur. The Rapid Support Forces, “commanded by Brigadier Hemeti, are supervised by the Second Vice-President, according to JEM. The statement said that Abdel Rahman, who originates from Darfur, was appointed as Vice-President to become “a poisoned dagger to be stabbed in the backs of honourable people”. “He is the main patron of the tribal militias.” File photo: Hassabo Abdel Rahman (Suna)
