Darfur rebel JEM release 9 border guards militia through local officials
The Justice and Equality Movement said that it released on Sunday nine border guards, including an officer, who were captured during the recent fighting between the government and the movement in North Darfur. The nine prisoners were handed over through the Native Administration. Omar Abdullah Karma, a rebel official, told Radio Dabanga that the handover was carried out by the Omda Hassan Abdelmajid Ahmed, an envoy of the nazir (a high-ranking native administrator). This came after the government refused to carry out the hand-over through the Red Cross, JEM claims. Amin criticised the government’s refusal as immoral, and suggested that this underlines the government’s indifference to the militias that it had recruited for its battles with JEM.
