Compensation for East Darfuris affected by attacks
The Sudanese ministers of Interior Affairs and Defence attended an extraordinary parliamentary session on Monday to answer questions about the incidents in Bir Yassin, East Darfur, last Wednesday. On Wednesday evening, an army soldier was shot dead by a colleague while he was watching football at a club in Bir Yassin. Angry soldiers then ravaged the area and torched a number of shops. Abdel Jabbar Abdallah, MP for Yassin locality, reported to Radio Dabanga that the ministers of Defence and Interior Affairs, and a representative of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) provided a report on the situation in the locality, “in the presence of the Minister of Federal Governance”. “They said that the authorities continue to extend the rule of law, and are capable of resolving the conflict between the parties in the area. A police committee has been formed to investigate the incident.” The total of the losses in Bir Yassin has been estimated at about SDG 2 million ($348,350). About 59 shop owners and others have been effected by the attacks by angry soldiers. Abdallah said that the effected will be compensated by the Ministry of Defence. The MP added that efforts are going on to reconcile the warring Ma’aliya and the Rizeigat in East Darfur “as soon as possible”.
