Clashes between police and militiamen shut-down Bindisi, Central Darfur
Shops, schools and government institutions in Bindisi in Central Darfur closed their doors on Monday after violent clashes erupted in the city between police and pro-government militiamen. A witness told Radio Dabanga that the clashes broke out at about midday on Sunday, and continued until 1am on Monday. The source attributed the start of the shooting to an attempt by the militiamen to loot the city market. “Both parties were firing with rifles and ‘dushka’ machine guns but there was no loss of life,” he reported. He noted however that on Sunday afternoon, the militiamen stole 40 sheep, five motorcycles, and “attempted to burgle the home of the Humanitarian Aid Commissioner of Bundisi locality in broad daylight”.
